How to Consciously Create Your Reality

Consciously or unconsciously, we create our own reality, every moment of every day.

If you aren’t familiar with the spiritual laws of vibration and attraction, do some research. When you understand that your thoughts, feelings, actions, and reactions have a frequency or vibration that attracts more of the same, you can create anything you desire.

At a high level, the Law of Vibration states that everything in the universe consists of energy in motion, including us. Every thought, word, action, and reaction emits a particular frequency or vibration. The Law of Attraction states that we attract experiences, emotions, events, and people into our lives that match our inner vibration.

Knowing this, it is beneficial to increase your awareness of what you focus on, how you respond to various situations, and how you feel.

How can you do this? Throughout the day, pay close attention to what you are focusing on. With each new thought, determine how it makes you feel. Do you feel good or bad? Is your body relaxed or tight? Are you feeling in the flow, moving with ease and grace, or are you meeting resistance and obstacles at every turn?

If you feel good, relaxed, and in the flow, continue to focus on the same (or similar) things. If you are feeling sad, angry, constricted, and/or meeting resistance, consider whether you want to give your attention to that particular topic or if you wish to respond in the same manner.

When you feel good, you raise your vibration and attract more of the same. On the flip side, when you focus on things that make you feel bad, that’s what you attract. Therefore, it’s advantageous to become conscious of where you put your attention. With this awareness, you can recognize how you are feeling and connect the dots to what you are focused on. When it doesn’t feel good, simply shift to a different thought, conversation, or TV channel. Or go outside and connect with nature, take a walk, or engage in any activity that nurtures your soul.

These days, we have countless distractions that can suck us into autopilot. A few examples are mindless TV, scrolling through social media, and streaming drama shows.

There are times when less-than-positive topics capture our attention. For example, you may watch a video of a war-torn area highlighting the devastation and people suffering. In these situations, instead of spending excessive time absorbing the destruction and being drawn into it, look for ways to consciously contribute. You can pray for peace or send love, light, and compassion to all who are involved.

Our minds often shift to the negative. We observe something that doesn’t align with our values, we find ourselves judging others, or we beat ourselves up over how we handled a particular problem. When this occurs, take a deep breath and let it go. Forgive yourself and others, and then move on by shifting to a new, empowering thought.

A great exercise is to ask yourself if ‘X’ serves your highest and greatest good. ‘X’ may be whatever you are thinking, saying, or doing. Ask this question continually throughout the day. Tuning into how you feel and asking yourself if it serves you is a great way to bring conscious awareness into your life.

The more you focus on negativity, doom, and gloom, the more you’ll manifest it in your reality. However, if you focus on what nurtures your soul, makes you feel good, and raises your vibration, that’s what you’ll manifest.

When you remember that where your attention goes your energy flows, you can consciously offer your vibration through your thoughts, words, and actions and, over time, create the reality you truly desire.

Wishing you peace, love, joy, and an abundance of blessings – Chris/Sedona

Pass on Perfection & Live a Happier Life

Aiming for perfection makes perfect sense for doctors performing surgery, engineers designing an airplane, and anyone working in life and death situations.  For most of us, our day-to-day work doesn’t include those implications.
We strive for success in our respective pursuits but seeking perfection isn’t the best approach. Psychology Today calls perfectionism “a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or looks” and “a fast and enduring track to unhappiness.”
Perfectionists fear making a mistake might cause others to think poorly of them, get them fired, or any other plethora of negative outcomes. This obsession with perfection creates an unachievable standard and a toxic focus on failures.
Experts have found that perfectionists are made not born. It starts at an early age, and unfortunately, demand is on the rise. Parents are increasingly insisting on perfectionism from their children and seeking status from their kid’s performance.
In The Perfect Lap. Ella’s parents expect Ella to be perfect. Ella puts undue pressure on herself in an ongoing attempt to meet their expectations. That is, until she learns another way. Below is an excerpt from The Perfect Lap where AJ shares his views on perfectionism with Ella and the kids they are fostering:
“My granddad taught me there’s no such thing as a perfect lap. He always said that I should give every race my best attempt, and the rest of it would find a way.” AJ shifted his gaze between the kids and Ella, who looked every bit as enthralled as the kids. That pleased him because his granddad’s wisdom was for her as much as it was for the kids. In some ways, it was even more important for Ella.
“So, you won even though you didn’t have a perfect season?” Madison asked.
“Darlin’,” he drawled, making Madison blush, “last season was so far from perfect you can’t even imagine. I lost my ride in April—”
“Huh?” Zach scratched his head.
AJ chuckled. “I got fired from my race team.”
The kids were obviously shocked by his admission. Zach’s eyes popped, Madison sucked in a sharp breath, and Kayla’s mouth dropped open. Ella also looked surprised. Knowing Ella, she had thoroughly researched him and knew his history. Her surprise was likely associated with his admission of imperfection. But he wanted the kids and Ella to learn what he had learned—you don’t need to be perfect to be successful, you need to be persistent.

“Yep, I got fired. I sat out for two races before Davey asked me to join Team Johnson.” He smiled at the attentiveness he had from Madison, Kayla, Zach, and Ella. “Throughout the season, I led a lot of laps and I sucked in a lot of laps, too.”
The girls giggled.
“I did what my granddad taught me—I tried my best each and every lap. Sometimes I won. Sometimes I didn’t, but I still accumulated a lot of points. Other times, despite my best efforts, I didn’t do well at all.” He slid his gaze between the kids and Ella. “When that happened, I told myself it was okay, that I’d do better the next time.” He leaned in toward Zach. “You know what? I always did.”
Let’s take a pointer from AJ and not buy into the pressure from society, our family, friends, and even ourselves. As Leo Tolstoy wrote in Anna Karenina, “If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.”

8 Spiritual Themes in The Perfect Lap

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

As an author it’s my desire to write stories that entertain and inspire. To this end, I’m blending traditional romance and women’s fiction with new age spirituality. My novels include plenty of romance, conflict, and family drama, along with new age concepts like the Law of Attraction and Focusing on the Now.

There are many thought-provoking themes in my newly released contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap, including:
©     Non-judgment
©     Everyone is doing the best they can from where they are
©     Giving from a place of love
©     Prioritizing joy
©     Living in the now
©     The difference of one
©     Gratitude
©     No such thing as perfection
Below I’ve included select questions from The Perfect Lap’s Reading Group Guide related to these themes to prompt further contemplation.

1.     Non-judgment: Ella has a preconceived notion about the Piper kids’ mother before she meets Clare. After she gets to know Clare, she finds someone entirely different than what she had envisioned. Have you ever experienced this? What did you learn?

2.     Everyone is doing the best they can from where they are: AJ’s grandfather taught him this concept. What do you think this means? Do you agree or disagree with this philosophy, and what supports your position?

3.     Giving from a place of love: Cruz tells AJ that he needs to give from a place of love. Do you think the reason for giving makes a difference, or is it just the gift that matters? Please explain your position.

4.     Prioritizing joy: AJ suggests that Ella make an important job decision based on what makes her happy. What do you think about this advice and why?

5.     Living in the now: AJ’s granddad used to tell him to “stop fretting and live his life.” What do you think he meant by this?

6.     The difference of one: Ella’s aunt taught her that one person can make a difference. Do you agree? Why or why not?

7.     Gratitude: In the New Age Parenting class that Ella and AJ attend, they learn that giving gratitude shifts your energy from negative to positive. Do you believe this? If so, how does this work?

8.     No such thing as Perfection
a.      AJ’s grandfather taught him that there’s no such thing as perfection; in racing this translated to no such thing as a perfect lap. What are your thoughts on perfection?
b.      AJ taught Ella and the kids that you don’t need to be perfect to be successful, you need to consistently do your best. Do you agree? Why or why not?

A full list of Reading Group Guide questions can be found at the end of The Perfect Lap and on my website at: https://sedonahutton.com/the-perfect-lap-rgg.

8 Ways to Choose Kindness

Kindness Matters!

In my contemporary romance, Nora’s Promise, Steph indicates Kindness is a Choice.

What do you think? Is kindness something you’re born with…is it learned…or is it a choice?

Like Steph, I believe kindness is a choice. Sometimes it’s easy to be kind; at other times it can challenging. Choosing kindness requires presence, intention, and a connection with your true self.

There are health benefits associated with kindness. Scientific studies have shown that practicing—or even witnessing—acts of kindness promote feelings of peace and joy, reduce stress, and increase immunity.

Albert Schweitzer said, “Constant kindness can accomplish so much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.”

There are countless ways to choose kindness. Below is a short list of ideas to help you get started.

8 Ways to Choose Kindness:

1.     Smile! A simple smile creates ripples of positivity.
2.     Give someone in need a hug.
3.     Offer a kind word. Mother Teresa said, “Kind words are short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”
4.     Give a compliment.
5.     Forgive. Holding a grudge is harmful to your health…let it go, and offer compassion instead.
6.     Pay it forward. Buy a stranger a cup of coffee or surprise a neighbor with a batch of cookies.
7.     Practice non-judgment. Transcending the need to judge allows you and others the freedom to be who they are.
8.     Be kind to yourself! Spend time every day doing things that bring you joy.

“Remember there is no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” Scott Adams

Effortlessly Manifest Your Desires

Vision boards are all the rage these days, and for good reason. If you Google vision board success stories, you’ll generate over 12 million responses!

If you don’t know what a vision board is or how to create one, you may be surprised to learn that it’s a super easy process. To create a vision board, you simply put together a collage of pictures, words, and/or images that represent your deepest desires and display your board someplace where you’ll see it every day. Alternatively, you can create a digital vision board by compiling your pictures, words, or quotes into a collage and making it the screensaver on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
Super simple, right?

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.” Rosabeth Moss Canter

What powers the wide-spread success people are experiencing with vision boards? Is it intention setting, visualization, or some mystical force that grants wishes like a fairy god-mother?

In my contemporary romance novel, Nora’s Promise, Steph touches on this question:

Nora raised a skeptical brow. “So you put pictures on a board and it all magically comes true?”

“There’s a little magic,” Steph conceded, “but there’s science too. When you look at your pictures each and every day, signals go to your brain outlining your desires. A seed is planted in your subconscious and its reinforced every time you look at your board. Looking at the pictures also puts vibrations of your wishes into the universe so the universe can begin its magic to help you.” Excitement bubbled inside Steph. She hadn’t thought about her vision board in a long time, but there was a reason why she was thinking about it now. It was time for her to put her most intimate desires out there once again. It was time to ask, believe, and receive.

“The best way to achieve your goals is to keep them top of mind, so you’re always looking for ways to move yourself closer to them – and a vision board is the perfect tool to help you do that.” Jack Canfield

Given how easy it is to create a vision board, why not join the movement and begin the process of effortlessly manifesting your deepest desires?

47% of waking hours are spent thinking about what isn’t going on!

This blog was written as a guest post for LauriesPlace.net as a part of a blog tour for NORA’S PROMISE. Please stop by to check out the full tour at: https://lauriesplace.net/.

Focusing on the present moment is a key theme in my contemporary romance, NORA’S PROMISE.

It sounds simple, but for most of us, living in the now requires practice and ongoing awareness. A Harvard study found that people spend 47% of their waking hours thinking about what isn’t going on. It’s human nature to spend time dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Unfortunately, this isn’t good for us. The Harvard study shows that this mind-wandering makes people unhappy.

“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” says Killingsworth and Gilbert, professors of psychology at Harvard. “The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.”

“Mind-wandering is an excellent predictor of people’s happiness,” Killingsworth says. “In fact, how often our minds leave the present and where they tend to go is a better predictor of our happiness than the activities in which we are engaged.”

Increased happiness is an excellent reason to focus on the now. According to spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, the only time we’re truly alive is in the present moment. Not in the past…not in the future…we live our lives in the now.

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”—Eckhart Tolle

“When we live in the flow of that stream of energy, we remain centered and fulfilled even through the ups and downs of our day.” — Deepak Chopra

“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

Living in the now allows us to savor the simple moments in life. It increases joy, reduces stress, and enhances our connection with others.

The greatest obstacle of presence is the mind. Mind-wandering is our brain’s default approach. Given this, we must be conscious of our thoughts and recognize when we’re not fully present. Once this acknowledgment takes place, there are many ways in which one can reconnect with the present moment. Several suggestions are provided below:

§  An age-old tip is to focus on your breathing. Bringing your attention to your breath reduces the number of thoughts running through your mind and opens space for awareness of what’s going on inside and around you.

§  Consciously move your body. Wiggle your toes, fist and release your hands. Roll your neck. It’s amazing how these simple movements return your attention to the now.

§  Ask yourself, “Am I present?” If not, redirect your focus. Ask this question many times throughout the day…and overtime you’ll likely find an upward trend of, “Yes!” responses.

§  Focus on your immediate surroundings using your senses. Listen to the birds chirping. Gaze at the mountains. Feel the sun warming your skin. Breathe in the scent of pine. Cup your hands around a mug of tea; feel its warmth and draw in the delicious spices.

Now it’s your turn—what techniques do you use to refocus or to remain focused on the present moment?

Accepting What Is (Even the Flu!)

This blog was recently featured as a guest blog post on Leonard Tillerman's website: https://t.co/O33cob1gPx.

Last week I came down with the flu. I had hot and cold flashes, a sore throat, a runny nose…the whole gamut. In my miserable state, I attempted to think positive thoughts to will away my sickness, but my body mocked my best efforts.

Resigned, I stayed in bed for a couple of days. When I finally summoned a smidgen of energy, a new awareness emerged. It felt good to rest!

For many of us, November and December are busy months. I’ve been visiting kids and grandkids, working, writing, decorating, shopping, baking, wrapping…the list goes on and on. In the middle of my hustle-bustle, at the most inconvenient time, I got sick.

When I told my mother I had the flu, her response was simple. “Maybe your body just needs rest.”

Huh.

Pondering the idea that I’d caught the flu because my body recognized my need for rest, the concept of acceptance surfaced. It’s easy to practice acceptance when things are going my way. It’s much harder to accept what is when things aren’t as I want them to be. But perhaps practicing acceptance is every bit as important—maybe even more important—during challenging times.

In one of my favorite books, The Ten Commitments by Dr. David Simon, there’s an entire chapter dedicated to acceptance. Simon states: “When you resist what is happening in this moment, you are resisting the entire flow of life. I encourage you to practice acceptance of this moment, because considering what you are up against (the entire universe from the beginning of time), resistance is unlikely to be successful.”

Instead, Simon suggests accepting what is in every moment. Accepting what is doesn’t mean you want to stay where you are, nor does it mean you shouldn’t take action. However, when you acknowledge and accept where you are, it creates an opening for new ideas and alternative choices that can help you move toward that which you desire.

In the past, I’ve resisted my sickness. I’ve chastised myself over doing too much, eating poorly, and not exercising. I have questioned my judgment over traveling, attending a holiday party and shopping on the busiest day of the year, exposing me to countless sick people. But the self-judgment only made me feel worse.

Bemoaning our current situation or blaming ourselves or others releases negative energy and attracts more of the same. Instead of resisting what is, practice acceptance, which allows for a positive energy shift. If you don’t like what is, determine if there are alternatives or steps that will help you achieve your desired state. Practicing acceptance brings inner peace.

“Accept—then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it…This will miraculously transform your entire life.”—Eckhart Tolle

Going forward, instead of beating myself up, I’m going to practice acceptance. I will accept my flu, cold, or whatever bug I might have, without blame. Instead, I’m going to view my illness as a gift of rest, relaxation, and detox.

“If I could define enlightenment briefly I would say it is the quiet acceptance of what is.”—Wayne Dyer

Holiday Unity

There is great religious and thought diversity in our country with nearly thirty different holidays celebrated between November 1 and January 15. Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanza, Diwali, Bodhi Day, Winter Solstice, and many others.

While the nightly news highlights the issues caused by this diversity, there is also much compassion and kindness shared between those with different beliefs. Food served to the homeless, an Angel Christmas tree, an encouraging word, a smile, a hug…people helping people across religion, race, nationality, sexual orientation and a multitude of other differences.

At our core, we’re all the same. We have the same basic desires—peace, love, joy, and compassion. Maybe even more important, we’re all connected. Genetic studies have shown that everyone on Earth is related to everyone else if we go back a few thousand years.

Namaste is an ancient Sanskrit greeting that means, “the Spirit in me connects with the Spirit in you.” What a beautiful way to greet others and to acknowledge and honor our connectedness!

What if we focused on this connection instead of our divisions? What if we looked for the good in others instead of fixating on our differences? Focusing on the positive creates peace within and in the collective consciousness. Imagine what our world would look like without judgment, without an ‘us’ versus ‘them’, without hate.

During this holiday season, let’s celebrate our unity. Let’s spread holiday cheer by practicing non-judgment, compassion, kindness, and acceptance. One by one, we can create peace within and be the change we want to see in the world.

Wishing each of you a Happy Holiday in whatever way you celebrate it and a New Year filled with peace, love, and connectedness.

Namaste!
