6 Easy Ways to Practice Gratitude

GRATITUDE: NOUN
“The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” —
Lexico–Oxford Dictionary

No matter where we are on our life’s path, we always have something to be grateful for. Luke Bryan states this well in his smash country hit, “Most People Are Good”: “…every breath’s a gift, the first one to the last.”

Even on a bad day, there are so many things to be grateful for—our breath, shelter, food, family, friends, pets, our planet, and even for life itself. The list is endless if we take time to contemplate.

When we feel gratitude for the blessings in our lives, we cultivate a deep sense of positivity. According to Psychology Today, feeling grateful boosts happiness and delivers physical and psychological health benefits. Our gratitude also benefits others. When we’re feeling grateful, we’re kinder, more generous, and more giving toward our family, friends, and really, everyone around us.

So how does one cultivate a practice of gratitude? There isn’t just one way, but many paths to gratitude.

In my contemporary romance, Nora’s Promise, Nora uses an easy technique—she runs through a mental list of gratitudes in her mind. Below is a brief excerpt:
Nora needed to pull herself together and focus on the now. Using a technique Steph had taught her, she silently listed her gratitudes. Ben, Davey, Steph, Cruz. Cosmo, Concordia, Chance. Ella and Hud. The mountains and open land around them. Her mood lifted and she felt a smile tug at the corners of her mouth. Her list had barely scratched the surface. With so much to be thankful for, how could she be in a bad mood?

6 Easy Ways to Practice Gratitude

  1. Like Nora, make a mental list of the things you’re grateful for (this works no matter where you are—in a car, on an airplane, in line at the grocery store…the possibilities are endless!)
  2. Write your gratitudes in a journal every morning.
  3. Give gratitude at the beginning of your meditation or yoga practice.
  4. Take a mindful walk and give thanks for the experiences along your journey.
  5. Take turns sharing gratitudes with a group of family members or friends.
  6. Perform a random act of kindness (this can be as simple as a smile or a hug, a cup of coffee, or a gift to someone in need.) When you show compassion to others, it’s hard not to feel a corresponding sense of gratitude.

Gratitude is a powerful process that fosters optimism by shifting energy from negative to positive. Given the significant benefits, why not make gratitude a part of your daily routine?

“Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.” – Amy Collette

5 Easy Ways to Embrace Uncertainty & Change

Happy Fall! We’ve moved into the season where Mother Earth focuses on letting go and preparing for change. Fall provides a welcome break from the heat of summer and an indication that change is coming. As little goblins and ghouls come out for Halloween and leaves in hues of yellow, orange, and red flutter to the ground, we’re reminded that our lives also follow nature’s cycles.

Just as leaves release from their branches, we also have the opportunity to let go. Fall is the perfect time to consider any behaviors, emotions or undertakings that no longer serve us. When we eliminate that which holds us back, we open space for something new.

Like the earth prepares for winter, we too can prepare for change. Change is a constant in our lives. Things are always changing…sometimes this change is big, sometimes it’s small. Regardless of the magnitude, change can be scary or exciting. It’s all about perspective and choice. We can choose fear or we can choose to embrace uncertainty and change.

Fear keeps us stuck in the same place while embracing uncertainty allows us to learn, grow, and evolve through change.

5 Easy Ways to Embrace Uncertainty & Change:

1.     Acknowledge habits, behaviors, and/or actions that aren’t working. By identifying, accepting, and releasing that which no longer serves us, we can create space for something new and nourishing.
2.     Learn and Grow. In The Ten Commitments Dr. David Simon states, “This planet is a school for evolution of the soul.” Take advantage of the learning, growth, and evolution opportunities that come with change.
3.     Positivity. Most changes have at least some positive aspect—the proverbial silver lining—so fully embrace and celebrate the positives.
4.     Expect Success! Although humans are wired to instinctively fight or flee change, when we reflect on prior changes, more often than not the outcomes have been positive. Expect the same with forthcoming changes.
5.     Surround Yourself with Change Agents. Spending time with individuals who are positive and open to new experiences can help us successfully navigate through change.

Let’s take a hint from nature—Release behaviors and actions that no longer serve us and create space for positive change in our lives!

NEW AGE PARENTING: Redirecting self-talk from negative to positive

Most people respond more positively to a positive message. This is especially true—and especially important—for children who are continually learning and absorbing information like a sponge. The good news is that we can re-word almost anything into a positive statement.

Why is positive messaging so important? Lisa Hayes explains it perfectly: “Be careful how you are talking to yourself because you are listening.”

This idea aligns with the Law of Attraction, a universal law embraced by spiritualists and physicists alike. I could write an entire book on the LOA, but as it relates to positivity: If our thoughts, words, and actions are positive, we attract more positive things into our lives. If our energy is negative, we attract more negativity into our lives.

“Loving or hating the life you are living is solely all in your repeated self-talk.”― Edmond Mbiaka

The concept of positive self-talk is touched on in my contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap. Ella and AJ unexpectedly join forces to co-foster three children and quickly learn they’re out of their league. They attend a New Age Parenting class, and one of the topics covered is redirecting self-talk from negative to positive.

Below is an excerpt from The Perfect Lap which explains this concept:
“Next, we’re going to talk about redirecting self-talk from negative to positive,” Adrian said. He glanced around the room. “Let’s use a few examples. Anyone want to offer up some negative talk you’ve heard from your kids?”
“I’m stupid,” a man in the front row said.
“Ah, yes.” Adrian gave a wry smile. “A classic.” He walked to the flip board and wrote, Root Cause. “I’m going to give examples of redirecting, but make sure you understand the reason why your child is feeling the way he or she is feeling. If the redirect is a generic platitude, it won’t work. If your child got a D on his test, you could say something like, ‘You’re smart. I struggled with Algebra, too. I always had to study extra hard to get good grades in my math classes.’ ” Adrian walked around the room. “If you don’t know why your child is feeling mad, sad, or whatever, ask her what’s going on. That will allow you to validate her feelings, empathize, and then customize your redirect.” Adrian gave a few more examples before wrapping up. “That’s it. Easy-peasy, right?”

Below are two additional examples of redirecting self-talk from negative to positive:

Instead of, “I messed this up. I’m an idiot!”…How about: “It’s okay. It gave you the opportunity to learn and you’ll do better next time.”

Instead of, “I don’t have any friends,”…Reframe to show examples: “Lisa helped you with your homework yesterday…You helped Scott on the playground at recess. You joined the reading club and met a lot of new kids.”

Let’s help our children—and each other—get rid of negative self-talk. It’s time to rise up, embrace positivity, and be all we were meant to be!

Writing Tip: Deep Characterization Enables Deep POV

When I first started writing, I found a character worksheet on the Internet and filled it out. Heroine: Age: 24. Red hair, green eyes, lots of curves. Hero: Age: 26. Midnight hair, cobalt eyes, plenty of hard muscle. A few more details and I was ready to write my masterpiece!

I quickly learned that without significant character detail, my manuscript was plagued with inconsistencies and required continuous rework. Even worse, my characters didn’t feel real because I didn’t know them well enough to get inside their heads.

Through research, courses, and good old-fashioned trial and error, I learned the art of deep characterization.

So what is deep characterization? Deep characterization entails developing your characters inside and out. It’s getting to know your main characters as well as you know your best friend.

Deep characterization is not just a physical description nor is it answering a few easy questions. It’s a detailed assessment of your character’s personality, strengths, flaws, and wounds. It’s a comprehensive understanding of his/her childhood, family, friends, pets, phobias, memories, and so on. It’s how he/she relates to the world, how they react to stress and other emotions. It’s even about their favorite food, color, TV show, movie, and book because each of these can offer invaluable nuggets of information about your characters…that is, if you dig deep enough.

There are many ways to create deep characterization. I use deep characterization worksheets, character interviews, and the 5-Why Process. I learned most of these techniques through OIRWA courses taught by Laurie Sanders. For more information, please visit Laurie at: https://lauriesplace.net/.

5-Why Process

This easy process can be used to generate a deep understanding of your character.

Instructions: Take one aspect of your character and ask 5 questions. Sometimes you may find that you need to ask 5 more and then 5 more!

Example

Character: AJ Ryan, the hero in my contemporary romance, The Perfect Lap.
What is AJ’s favorite drink? A shot of Jack Daniels.
Why is this his favorite drink? It brings back warm memories of his granddad who enjoyed an occasional shot of Jack Daniels. AJ moved in with his grandfather when he was 12.
Why did AJ move in with his grandfather? Because his mother couldn’t handle him.
Why couldn’t AJ’s mother handle him? Because AJ got into a lot of trouble, including smoking, getting bad grades, skipping school, taking a joy ride in his neighbor’s car, etc.
Why did AJ get in trouble? It was the only way he could get attention from his mother. Otherwise, she primarily focused on his younger half-brother, Sam.

You can see how this 5-Why exercise helped me dig into AJ’s background. After completing many of these, I gained a deeper understanding of AJ and what makes him tick.

Completing deep characterization before you start writing allows your story to flow from your characters. It also enables writing in a deep point of view. When I start a new story, I complete deep characterization first—even before I develop themes, plots, and outlines. When I start with deep characterization, the rest of it flows with effortless ease.

Gratitude in THE PERFECT LAP: You can't be stressed when you're feeling blessed!

“You can’t be stressed when you’re feeling blessed!”
This quote is from The Perfect Lap, my recently released contemporary romance novel. In The Perfect Lap, Ella and AJ unexpectedly join forces to co-foster three children, and quickly learn they’re out of their league. They attend a New Age Parenting class, and one of the topics covered is gratitude.

Sometimes kids and adults make poor choices that lead to negative energy. How we respond makes all the difference. In The Perfect Lap, Ella, AJ, and the kids come up with a time-out word that any of them can call out. Once the word is said, they all take a few minutes of silence. During that time, they reflect on where they are mood-wise (energy-wise) and consider if that’s where they want to be. Often, after this pause, they each share a few gratitudes.

"We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures." - Thornton Wilder

Ella and AJ experienced positive results when practicing gratitude with the kids. Negativity disappeared, bad moods faded, and spirits were lifted. I've found the same results in my own life. Not surprising since it’s backed by science! Studies have shown when you’re feeling genuinely grateful, it’s impossible to at the same time feel angry, anxious, or any other negative emotion.

When we’re stressed, our minds and bodies are pummeled with strain. Blood flow redirects to muscles needed to fight or flee and brain functions are minimized. Physically, ongoing stress can cause a long list of health issues.

On the other hand, when we’re focused on our blessings, our minds and bodies are relaxed and we experience positive emotions like love, joy, and hope. Gratitude helps us fully experience happy moments in life, build strong relationships, improve health, and deal with hardships.

How can you bring more gratitude into your life? Let me count the ways…You can write your gratitudes in a journal, say them out loud, or recount them silently. You can share your gratitudes in a group setting like Ella and AJ did with the kids. The method doesn’t matter as much as the exercise. Practicing gratitude in any form connects you with the present moment, creates positive energy, and generates feelings of love and compassion.

Looking for a romance novel or a spiritual book—why not try a blend of both?

I love reading spiritual books that offer personal inspiration and transformation. The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire by Deepak Chopra, The Ten Commitments by David Simon, and Ask And It is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks are among my favorites.

While I enjoy these books, it takes me a while to finish reading them because I need to process the outlined ideas and ponder how I might integrate what I learned in my own life. Years ago, while contemplating this, an inspiration formed. I could write fictional stories about real characters with real issues and embed spiritual concepts to show how they might work in real-life situations.

These days, I'm doing just that! I’m blending traditional romance and women’s fiction with new age spirituality.

In a recent guest blog post, Laurie Sander’s described my blended genre as follows:
I’m sure you’re all familiar with the inspirational romance category. Some of you probably read it and maybe even write it. I enjoy inspirational romance and count authors like Karen Witemeyer and Autumn Macarthur among my favorites. And have I blogged about Karen’s book The Short Straw Bride over here.

Effortlessly Manifest Your Desires

Vision boards are all the rage these days, and for good reason. If you Google vision board success stories, you’ll generate over 12 million responses!

If you don’t know what a vision board is or how to create one, you may be surprised to learn that it’s a super easy process. To create a vision board, you simply put together a collage of pictures, words, and/or images that represent your deepest desires and display your board someplace where you’ll see it every day. Alternatively, you can create a digital vision board by compiling your pictures, words, or quotes into a collage and making it the screensaver on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
Super simple, right?

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.” Rosabeth Moss Canter

What powers the wide-spread success people are experiencing with vision boards? Is it intention setting, visualization, or some mystical force that grants wishes like a fairy god-mother?

In my contemporary romance novel, Nora’s Promise, Steph touches on this question:

Nora raised a skeptical brow. “So you put pictures on a board and it all magically comes true?”

“There’s a little magic,” Steph conceded, “but there’s science too. When you look at your pictures each and every day, signals go to your brain outlining your desires. A seed is planted in your subconscious and its reinforced every time you look at your board. Looking at the pictures also puts vibrations of your wishes into the universe so the universe can begin its magic to help you.” Excitement bubbled inside Steph. She hadn’t thought about her vision board in a long time, but there was a reason why she was thinking about it now. It was time for her to put her most intimate desires out there once again. It was time to ask, believe, and receive.

“The best way to achieve your goals is to keep them top of mind, so you’re always looking for ways to move yourself closer to them – and a vision board is the perfect tool to help you do that.” Jack Canfield

Given how easy it is to create a vision board, why not join the movement and begin the process of effortlessly manifesting your deepest desires?

47% of waking hours are spent thinking about what isn’t going on!

This blog was written as a guest post for LauriesPlace.net as a part of a blog tour for NORA’S PROMISE. Please stop by to check out the full tour at: https://lauriesplace.net/.

Focusing on the present moment is a key theme in my contemporary romance, NORA’S PROMISE.

It sounds simple, but for most of us, living in the now requires practice and ongoing awareness. A Harvard study found that people spend 47% of their waking hours thinking about what isn’t going on. It’s human nature to spend time dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Unfortunately, this isn’t good for us. The Harvard study shows that this mind-wandering makes people unhappy.

“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” says Killingsworth and Gilbert, professors of psychology at Harvard. “The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.”

“Mind-wandering is an excellent predictor of people’s happiness,” Killingsworth says. “In fact, how often our minds leave the present and where they tend to go is a better predictor of our happiness than the activities in which we are engaged.”

Increased happiness is an excellent reason to focus on the now. According to spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, the only time we’re truly alive is in the present moment. Not in the past…not in the future…we live our lives in the now.

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”—Eckhart Tolle

“When we live in the flow of that stream of energy, we remain centered and fulfilled even through the ups and downs of our day.” — Deepak Chopra

“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

Living in the now allows us to savor the simple moments in life. It increases joy, reduces stress, and enhances our connection with others.

The greatest obstacle of presence is the mind. Mind-wandering is our brain’s default approach. Given this, we must be conscious of our thoughts and recognize when we’re not fully present. Once this acknowledgment takes place, there are many ways in which one can reconnect with the present moment. Several suggestions are provided below:

§  An age-old tip is to focus on your breathing. Bringing your attention to your breath reduces the number of thoughts running through your mind and opens space for awareness of what’s going on inside and around you.

§  Consciously move your body. Wiggle your toes, fist and release your hands. Roll your neck. It’s amazing how these simple movements return your attention to the now.

§  Ask yourself, “Am I present?” If not, redirect your focus. Ask this question many times throughout the day…and overtime you’ll likely find an upward trend of, “Yes!” responses.

§  Focus on your immediate surroundings using your senses. Listen to the birds chirping. Gaze at the mountains. Feel the sun warming your skin. Breathe in the scent of pine. Cup your hands around a mug of tea; feel its warmth and draw in the delicious spices.

Now it’s your turn—what techniques do you use to refocus or to remain focused on the present moment?
